Today will be the first of a trilogy of posts as I talk about the process I went through of designing a shared room for the Baby and the Boy. Ah, the shared room. What grief it gave me, let me tell you. Prior to moving, I had visions of hardwood floors, high ceilings, lots of natural light and clean white walls for the kid’s room. Well, I got most of it, except the hardwood floors in the rest of the apartment actually end at the bedroom door, and in comes in the most boring beige berber carpet you’ve ever seen coupled with matching- and equally boring- beige walls. Ok, fine, I think- suck it up and make this work. I envisioned pink and yellow for her with grey accents, and grey and white for him. Clean, fresh, so very LA, non? This is the design board I put together, and the very basis for this entire scheme was the lovely Rosette bedding by one of my favourite design houses, Dwell Studio. I went ahead and ordered the bedding making sure to call and confirm that the leaves were grey, not greige or brown, but grey. Definitely grey, I was told, but when it arrived, the leaves were brown. Not even a hint of grey. Wah wahhh. Since brown is probably one of my least favourite colours, I sort of have this mental block around it, and so of course, the whole design collapsed. I couldn’t for the life of me- despite having this board- visualize a room that was brown on one side and charcoal on the other, especially not with the abundance of beige already present. So, out this went. That said, it still remains a very cute board and if you can get around the decidedly brown leaves in the bedding, I urge you to consider it if you are designing a shared room for your kidlets.
Next Tuesday, I’ll show you the second iteration of this design board, and the following Tuesday, I’ll reveal the actual board that their room is based on, and if I manage to finish assembling it all, maybe I’ll even do a room reveal. Let’s hope!
