Although I love the versatility and “blank canvas” appeal of white walls, I have a special fondness for boldly painted walls. They can be art for your rooms without needing very much by way of accessories.
Our old house with its high ceilings, huge windows, gorgeous crown mouldings and hardwood floors absolutely demanded a bolder colour palette. The dining room was navy blue (Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore) and the study was mustard yellow (York Harbour Yellow by Benjamin Moore), but my favourite room of all time was our black bedroom. It was LUSH, you guys. I chose Benjamin Moore’s Onyx in a matte finish. It looked luxurious and it felt so indulgent. We had two large windows on one wall that let in lots of natural light. The furniture was simple- just an espresso bed frame with crisp taupe bedding, a faux fur throw in shades of brown and black, and two gold nightstands topped with white marble. A pair of white and gold task lamps provided ambient lighting, and a traditional brown and black Persian rug laid over the hardwood floors finished the look. In memoriam of that fabulous space, today I’m sharing twelve (12!) boldly painted rooms in out of the ordinary hues.
Personally, I lean heavily towards black or charcoal grey walls. What about you? Do you have a colourful home or do you favour neutrals?

This is very similar to the wall colour my teenaged self painted in her bedroom. It was suprisingly livable and both warm and vibrant at once. I had it paired with a pale blue and white duvet cover and black and white posters. I think it’s a perfect colour choice for a transitional space like an entry way too. From Apartment Therapy.

Normally, I’d look at a room like this and think, you so cray! But there’s something about this space that doesn’t give me the jitters- maybe its the particular shades used- bright but not hectic- but they work together. While I wouldn’t replicate this look exactly as shown, I can see these colours working very well together in artwork and accessories in an all white room. You guys, I *adore* this bohemian bedroom and when the Baby grows up, she will have royal blue and pale pink walls in her bedroom and a fabulous Italian canopy bed from Anthropologie just like this one. That is all. Taken from the June 2012 issue of House & Garden. Styling: Gabby Deeming and Olivia Gregory.

Bright green for the bedroom. I wish I had the skill to pair colours like this but I would probably just throw in lots of white and end up with a completely different look! From Domaine magazine. Photography by Kristian Walker.

Emerald green library- this is one of my favourite rooms. The chandelier, the leopard stools, the artwork- it’s all so eclectic and so luxe. From Domaine magazine. Photograph by Erin Swift.

An incredible hallway with dark blue walls and yellow doors, and I love the green space further down the hall. From бытие определяет сознание.

This is such a beautiful shade of blue and it perfectly complements the mid-century walnut console and yellow chair. From Patrician Goijens home via A Beautiful Mess.

I love the drama of an all-white space opening up to a more moody colour like this gorgeous dark blue-grey colour in Aerin Lauder’s living room. From Elle Decor.

What I love most about modern design is how any colour works in any space. For example, charcoal walls in a nursery, perfectly paired with mid-century design and that bright yellow Moroccan-tile patterned dhurrie. Love! Styling – Julia Green. Photo – Armelle Habib.

This is what our bedroom felt like- modern, textured, and minimalist without feeling cold. From Rikki Snyder Photography.

I adore this all black kitchen! The raspberry pink cabinets are chic and completely unexpected, and the overall look is so masculine. Space design and photography by Peter Fehrentz. Via Allie NYC.
